I Found The Perfect Vacation Place In Panama

I traveled to Panama to go to the Anton Valley. I decided to take the Mexicana from Los Angeles International to PTY Tocumen International Airport. Anton Valley was a place I meant to visit in my quest to find out if I could build a life in Panama. A quick Google search showed me that many other Internet surfers may have been on a similar quest. “Panama” is typed in over 500,000 searches each day.

The airplane ride from LAX to PTY with its layover in Mexico City was bearable. The stop in Mexico City could have been annoying, but instead it appeared that the Mexico City Airport had expanded and changed to become more welcoming than ever before.

Somewhere around Gate 10, I discovered a 100% organic restaurant that provided some really wholesome meals for great prices. I spent an hour in the establishment and was ready for the next phase of the trip.

I disembarked at PTY Tocumen International Airport 3.5 hours later. Tocumen is a contemporary airport but it feels like a very friendly small airport. Immigration and customs were quick with no problems at all. Every person in the airport was eager to please and ready to help. Outside the airport, the cab only cost $28 dollars and it would take me wherever I wanted to go in the city. The Toll Road Corridor was a smooth trip and within 20 minutes I stepped out at the Sheraton Hotel off of Via Israel. After a day of relaxation at the Sheraton, I was renewed and ready to start my trip to the Anton Valley. I reserved a rental car for a mere $30 and was ready to be off.

A mere two hour trek links Panama City to Anton Valley. The Valley is located within an inactive volcano crater where you can take in cool weather and light rain every month of the year.

A lot of trekking is done in this picturesque and lush location. Trekking means traveling over long distances by foot and connecting with the natural world in all its forms. Besides trekking, there are many other activities and points of interest to enjoy when you visit The Valley. These may include: El Nispero Zoo, hot springs, the Crafts and Souvenirs Market, The Valley Museum, La Pintada Petroglyphs, Las Mozas and El Macho trickles, and archeology sites. There are also a bevy of festivals and cultural celebrations to take part in while there: the Cristo de Esquipulas celebration, the Corpus Christi, national parties and the Torito Guapo Festival.

El Gaital Peak is home to an extensive range of animals and plants in its 335 hectares of protected property. It can be found in The Valley at 3,000 meters above sea level. The National Wildlife Authority’s (ANAM) facilities are headquartered there.

One of the most mysterious places Anton Valley has to offer is La India Dormida. This is where the hills of the Anton Valley form the silhouette of a young Indian woman that, according to local legend, fell madly in love with a Spaniard and cried her misfortune until nature took her as its own. Other legends say that the Sun turned her into part of the hill to save her from a love that was not returned by an arrogant Indian warrior of her tribe.

Driving from Panama City, you can take the Interamerican Highway all the way to El Higo of Anton. Once there, you will turn right until you reach The Valley. The trip could take around 2 hours.

Take plenty of bug repellent. Wear sturdy jeans, sneakers or boots to help you handle the terrain. Bring along a hat and light jacket to protect yourself from both sun and rain.
