5 Things to Check Before Buying a Diamond

Tuesday, February 8th, 2011

Jewelry stores keep coming up with these various tests to distinguish real diamonds from simulants. Garrett Payne, a certified gemologist in Phoenix, Arizona explains why. “One of the things that I learned in my undergraduate gemology class is just how difficult it is to separate the real ones from the fakes,” he says. “So, the only reliable way to tell the difference is to take the stone to a reputable jeweler and have him take a look at it.” To be honest, it’s mainly because their businesses are threatened simulants.

Considering synthetic, man-made diamonds look so real, why not try them out? For the modern shopper, there are some great reasons to think about getting a synthetic over a mined diamond. Check out the reasons:

1. Cost – The clearest reason is because diamond simulants are more affordable than natural diamonds. Consider a premier diamond-cut gemstone from Swarovski: a very nice solid gold or platinum setting will be under $1000 but the same cut in a diamond and set in the exact same setting would be approximately $10,000.

2. Clarity – Synthetic diamonds are created in a laboratory and therefore are literally perfect. As a consequence, light catching the stone will not be skewed because flaws and will have more radiance. The same diamond with a higher level of perfection will be incredibly pricey if it possesses the same level of “flawlessness” as a lab-created gem.

3. Color – Alternatives to diamonds don’t have color marks . The finest and most costly diamonds with this high level of quality are colorless, possessing a “D” color rating on the gem scale. Finding a diamond that fits into this category would be difficult and incredibly expensive if you were to compare it to a regular diamond. The types of diamonds many women can afford have yellow undertones and some dark blemishes in the stones.

4. More People Choose to Not Support the Diamond Industry- Ripe with claims of artificial price inflation and leaked documents indicating continued slave labor, some people do not wish to support the industry. Even with the so-called “Kimberly Process” that jewelry stores love to quote, the truth is the majority of diamonds are still products of horrific human rights abuses. The Kimberly Process is just a PR campaign to get people to believe the diamond industry has cleaned up their act when the absolutely have not.

5. People Will Not Know It’s Not a Natural Diamond – There are a lot of ways in which to see if a diamond is real however most of these methods require viewing the gemstone with magnification or doing analytical testing with the loose stone. The better part of society will never be able to tell the difference between real and synthetic is if you have a Swarovski diamond-cut simulant placed in a very nice platinum or 14k gold setting. There is no way of them knowing if it isn’t a real diamond unless the person tells them.

Naturally, it is up to the man or woman to decide if they will buy a lab, man-made diamond or a mined diamond. However, being so close in appearance to a diamond there are a lot of people deciding to go the way of synthetics–not only for financial purposes but also because they are not needing to buy them for the same reasons as they used to.

Designing Engagement Rings – With A Little Help From The Experts

Saturday, February 27th, 2010

It is fascinating how exciting it is for a couple to announce that they are getting married. It seems to make everyone, who is involved, smile. Marriage is quite an important part of so many cultures. In our culture, the announcement of marriage seems to be even more pertinent. Do you think designing engagement rings for yourself is a good idea if you and your partner plan to commit?

There are several jewelry artists around who are willing to help you create a one of a kind, original ring to celebrate the beginning of your lives together. You will have a fantastic story to share with family and friends, once the making becomes a reality.

If you happen to decide to put diamonds into your ring there are a few things you may want to contemplate. It has been said that there are four things to consider when deciding upon a diamond or diamond’s value and attributes. Those four things are: cut – defines the measurements and angles, clarity – refers to natural differences that are found in diamonds, color – defines how much color diamonds have, carat – this defines how much diamonds weigh. (You could probably consider “cost” a fifth “c” but these four things determined that).

Money is a big consideration when you decide upon buying or designing a ring. There is a claim that when you plan to purchase an engagement ring, you can be assured that you will probably spend two months salary on it. If you can spend more, that is well and good. Most people are on fixed incomes and have to adjust their budget accordingly. Share your thoughts with your partner and make the right choice for you both.

A ring, no matter how special, does not have to have diamonds. Neither does a ring always have to be made with gold. Silver is a beautiful metal and works quite well in the use of rings announcing commitment. Turquoise, Rubies, Emeralds and quite a variety of other stones, which are semi-precious, can be used if this is what you want.

The actual making of the ring quite pertinent if you ever want to wear your dream. But, you have to get it to the craftsperson in a decent amount of time so that he or she can do the work for which they are commissioned. Work with this person to get the exact ideas you want and be sure you are willing to compromise in case unseen difficulties should arise. Some things just cannot happen the way you may want them to and you should be willing to listen to this person so they can please you.

When the product is finished, the placing of the ring upon the finger is the most spectacular feeling. You will have so much to share with your children and grandchildren when questions arise about that ring.

Bridal Ring Sets – What Makes Them Better Than Separate Engagement And Wedding Rings?

Sunday, October 25th, 2009

Bridal ring sets are engagement rings and wedding rings that have been designed to be worn together. These are ideal for those who want their engagement ring and wedding band to look perfect together.

While engagement ring is a woman’s most cherished piece of jewelry, it is her matching wedding band that becomes the engagement ring’s lifelong mate. However, finding a wedding band that will match beautifully with the engagement ring is a difficult feat. This is why jewelers created a solution, the bridal ring sets. Bridal ring sets are made up of two rings – the engagement ring and the matching wedding band.

Bridal ring sets are designed to fit snugly together to form one ring. A common example of a bridal ring set is a wedding ring with a channel or bezel setting, coupled with a solitaire engagement ring. The solitaire engagement ring may or may not have side stones. Other popular bridal ring sets include those with criss-crossing diamonds and those with the same kinds of side stones on both the engagement ring and the wedding band.

Bridal ring sets can have an engagement ring with a center diamond surrounded by many side diamonds and a slender, unadorned wedding band. Wedding bands in bridal ring sets can also be an elaborate multi-diamond ring with two bands that fit around the engagement ring. Such distinct designs make the wedding bands blend in seamlessly with the engagement rings.

Here are some reasons why the bridal ring sets are better than separate engagement rings and wedding rings:

1. Bridal ring sets are cheaper than individual rings. You save a lot of money because these sets cost cheaper than individual rings. The price is one of the advantages of bridal ring set.

2. Bridal ring sets are well crafted to look good together. Bridal ring sets are designed in such a way that they will fit and look good together. This way, the bride will not worry about her rings not matching or looking awkwardly askew on her finger.

A few tips when buying the perfect bridal ring sets:

a. Narrow down your search. Set certain parameters to make your search faster and easier. This way you will narrow down your search to a few unique bridal sets. You can also set the price limit and narrow down your search to certain types of precious metals, colors, certain types of stones and cuts, etc. Bridal ring sets come in a wide variety of prices, stone sizes, designs and settings.

b. Find the perfect bridal ring sets that she will treasure forever. Most couples shop together for bridal ring sets, but if you want to surprise your future wife you must check out what she really prefers for engagement and wedding rings. Know her fashion jewelry for materials and styles she likes. After all, she’s the one who’s going to wear them, not you.
