Food Fight! The World’s Largest Food Fight Occurs Every Year in Spain

Early on a beautiful, bright sunny morning in August, trucks groaning with over 90,000 pounds of red ripe tomatoes ease down the ancient, narrow streets of this picturesque Mediterranean village in the Valencia region of Spain.

Bound for the Farmers’ Market?

Not today.

Today is the Annual La Tomatina — Or “Tomato Fight.”

By 11am this small town will be awash in a fiery blaze of tomato juice as up to 20,000 “combatants” engage in the world’s largest food fight.

First buckets of water are thrown at the crowd from the tomato trucks, mostly as a foretaste of what is to come. Then the tomatoes start rain down from the truck. Those on the ground catch and pickup the orbs and start throwing them back at the trucks and at each other. Soon it is all out red juice war with everyone seeming to be an army of one.

After the battle, you can wash off in makeshift public showers supplied by the town folk.

History of La Tomatina

The batalla — or “battle” — takes place during a week-long celebration that has no political or religious significance — it’s just good, messy fun. It seems to have started as recently as the 1940’s when a number of friends started a tomato fight for unknown reasons in Buol’s main town square. Soon the fun started drawing passers-by into the fray and everyone had a great time.

It was apparently so much fun that the city officials decided to make it an annual event and it has grown to the huge festival it is today drawing people — and attention — from all over the world.

They now sponsor it, pay for it and clean up the mess.

More Than Just Throwing Tomatoes

But that is because La Tomatina has grown into a full-blown fiesta that now includes the festival for the town’s patron saint. For the week leading up to the epic battle every year the town is filled with tourists — and tourist money! — and there are parades, fireworks and street parties with wine, music, dancing and plenty of good food including the town specialty — Paella.

Hoquiam Fishing – Of fish and Lumberjacks

Hoquiam River and the coastal areas of Hoquiam’s waterfront can provide sports fisherman and amateur anglers a variety of experiences in terms of fishing. As we all know angling is a very relaxing activity and most people go fishing to relieve stress and re-energize from the hustle and bustle of city life, while giving individuals a chance to commune with nature and test their patience and understanding of their fishy friends.

Hoquiam River has been stocked with Steelhead Smolts that have been sourced from hatcheries and the river is also open during the fall season for Salmon fishing. Salmon fishing is strictly regulated with existing regulations of the number, size and method of taking in keepers. Chinook and Coho like all Salmon are migratory fish that spawn in fresh water but grow and live most of their lives in the ocean. The Hoquiam waterfront offers fishing adventures also, aside from the other possible water activities that can be done in this marine environment. Fish that can be caught in the area are Perch, Striped Sea Perch and other fish that inhabit the historical pilings of the piers and various abutments that litter the entire waterfront. Those who are seeking a more challenging species can go after Sea-run Cutthroats that give more fight but be mindful of the regulations when taking in your catch since only fish that are fourteen inches in length can be taken and a maximum of two fish a day can be taken home. The rest should be catch and release to maintain healthy breeding numbers.

Before or after fishing or going through with your Hoquiam nature experience you can also take time to appreciate and absorb some history and culture that the people of Hoquiam have been able to preserve as part of their communities heritage. Part of this heritage is the Polson museum that serves as a depository for Hoquiam City’s history. They also have the Hoquiam Castle and the Historic Olympic stadium and 7th street theatre. All of which are historical landmarks that amazingly are still serving their purpose as venues for Hoquiam’s culture and heritage. Hoquiam city is also host to the very famous Loggers Playday, an annual event that shares the lumber industry’s influence if not the golden era of Hoquiam as a community to people from all walks of life.

Hoquiam Farmers Market – Good Food, Good Company

Throughout Hoquiam and Grays Harbor history the communities that were established, prospered, declined and stabilized to what it is today, needed a lot of things to support what industry and the men who ran and worked on those industries. The different mills and logging camps and timber companies all had work forces that needed constant supplies of basic goods and services. The farmers, fishermen and various craftsmen and business owners came or were already in Grays Harbor and Hoquiam city to meet those demands.

Hoquiam’s name came from a Native American term, which meant “Hungry for wood” fortunately it is the name given the river that empty into the pacific, not that the people ate wood because they were starving, but rather for the propensity of driftwood from naturally felled logs or through the efforts of men floating and clogging the mouth of the river.

The forest an old growth one supplied good wood and a multitude of people descended on the lumber treasure either as investors, workers or entrepreneurs seeking their fortunes from the ancient trees that dotted clustered and dotted the forest and harvest lumber they did, day in day out, working like there was no tomorrow finding little time to tend to their basic needs like the olden times, there was money to be made to provide for those needs through lumber.

The workers of the various paper and pulp mills and logging concerns increased steadily in numbers and the men and women who worked in these camps needed more supplies to feed and provide them with the basic necessities. More men meant more opportunities for farmers and other businesses to thrive.

Fish were far more bountiful before with fresh catch coming over from the coast and the fresh water species like trout and salmon come in from the various river systems all around the Olympic Peninsula, and most of not all those fish were caught by the lumber workers themselves if they can afford the time.
