The Other Places You Can Go When In Orlando

Tuesday, November 17th, 2009

Are you thinking about taking in holiday in Orlando or the surrounding area? Attracted, perhaps, by the increasing number of cheap flights to Orlando? You probably have in mind the well-known, household name attractions such as Walt Disney World, Universal or SeaWorld. Yet the area has far more to offer than these, a fact not always appreciated by visitors from overseas. Here, I will tell you about 5 of the less well-known attractions in the are around Orlando.

If you are fascinated by alligators and crocodiles then visit Gatorland instead of the more well-known SeaWorld. This freshwater reserve and theme park, opened in’49, is home to thousands of crocodiles and alligators. You can get to know these fascinating creatures at close quarters. The reserve includes a breeding marsh for conservation. Educational facilities are available and the entertainment includes a wrestling show.

Would you like to do visit a theme park that is totally unique? Consider the Holy Land Experience, a theme park and museum aiming to completely immerse you in biblical times. Careful reconstructions of ancient streets and lifelike re-enactments of key bibical scened add to the experience. Many people will find a visit to this theme park an educational, enjoyable and deeply moving day although some may feel that it is an attempt to cash in on religion for profit.

The historic marble tower and botanical gardens at Bok Tower Gardens (near Lake Wales) are an ideal destination for those who love nature. Founded as a bird reserve by Edward Bok in’21, the gardens provide a habitat for over one hundred species of birds as well as a variey of other wildlife. The carillon bells in the Singing Tower are rung daily and fill the gardens with music.

The SAK Comedy Lab in central Orlando is a “must-do” for comedy fans. Famous for improvisational comedy and theatre, the long-running “Duel of Fools”, featuring two teams improvising against each other, is its regular attraction altough seasonal shows occur all year round. Past productions have included “Fourplay: The Improvised Musical” – a humorous Broadway send up and game shows.

If you are on holiday in the US, you mustn’t miss that truly American tourist tradition, the medieval re-enactment. Found throughout the US, Medieval Times is a mock up of a traditional medieval castle. After you are seated in a corner of this dinner theatre you will be invited to through your support behind a knight. Whilst you eat your “royal” banquet, the knights battle through sword fights and jousting and you root for your chosen knight.

See a Space Shuttle Launch on Your Next Vacation

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Space shuttle mission STS-129 is scheduled to launch on November 12, 2009. In the following year, there are only 5 space shuttle missions planned to take place. After that, the era of the will be over. Now is the time to make your vacation plans to try and see a shuttle launch in person before the program ends.

Those 5 final space shuttle missions will be over by September, 2010. Now is your final chance to view a space shuttle launch. If you have ever considered seeing a space shuttle launch, try to make plans to do so now.

If you plan your shuttle launch viewing vacation with an Orlando vacation, then you will be guaranteed to have some fun even if the shuttle flight is delayed. Shuttle missions are extremely complicated, so shuttle launches dates often change. Fortunately, Orlando theme parks are just an hour away from the best places to view a space shuttle launch so your vacation can include both areas.

Where are the best places to see a shuttle launch? Almost anywhere in Titusville, the closest city to the Kennedy Space Center, is good to see the launch. Titusville even has a place called Space View Park, where people from all over the world congregate to witness space shuttles launching. Many of the locations are free to the public.

Other places to see launches are at the Kennedy Space Center. You can buy launch viewing tickets for the NASA causeway or the Visitor Complex through KSC. The Visitor Complex has a museum and Rocket Garden to see while waiting for your launch, but the view of the actual launch pad is obstructed. To see a launch at KSC, you have to get tickets in advance. They sell out quickly and there are no refunds.

Your Orlando vacation can include Walt Disney World, Sea World Orlando, and Universal Studios. You can also visit Discovery Cove, a tropical park where vacationers swim with dolphins and pet manta rays. Older children and adults enjoy the roller coasters at Sea World and Universal Studios.

So plan now to visit NASA and Orlando in 2010 on your next vacation. Hopefully, you will be able to view one of the final flights of this amazing spacecraft. There are only a few chances left to see a shuttle launch from the Kennedy Space Center. Your vacation will be filled with memories, whether you see a launch, or just enjoy a fantastic Florida vacation.
